Hi, this is Dave! I care about arcade games, super robots, and anime/manga. Serious about stupid.

I have been writing about my favorite nerd subjects for something like twenty years now, and doing so professionally for over a decade. Some of you know me from Anime News Network or Otaku USA talking about anime/manga culture. Some of you know me from Polygon, where I talk fighting games. You might even know me from my rather odd webcomic and beloved life’s work, Kawaiikochans. I like to keep busy.

This newsletter/blog is a continuation of my Medium, but with the subscription component of Substack. To be quite blunt, I have found that asking for donations has a 0% success rate— even when a piece really gets around— so I am going to give the subscription model a shot. It’s an experiment, and I’m counting on everyone to make it succeed.

Why subscribe?

Subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and website. Never miss an update.

There’s a free subscription for everybody, but like podcasters etc, I will be writing "bonus” material for paid subscribers. In short, deep dives on particular games that I have already reviewed will be subscriber posts.

For example, my first piece is a review of Lost Judgment. Everyone will get to read the review, but the bonus piece, where I talk about the story and get into the spoiler that bothers me the most, will be for paid subscribers only.

If you are a $5 sponsor on Kawaiikochans, I will give you access to the paid newsletter. Message me there if you aren’t already receiving it.

Stay up-to-date

You won’t have to worry about missing anything. Every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox.

About spoiler content: Because this is going to be coming to your inbox, I’m going to try and be VERY ALL-CAPS SERIOUS about potential spoilers. The spoiler is never going to be in the first line and there will be copious VERY SERIOUS warnings about spoilers.

Join the crew

I decided on paid-sub-only comments on the blog. Obviously this is a perk for paid subscribers, but I’m also doing it because I’ve seen it foster more civil discussions.

I’ve been all over the internet, managed blog comment sections, seen forums get killed. I know how bad things can get in public free-for-alls. I’m hoping that in this little tiny space you can perhaps have a decent talk about cartoons with like-minded people.
