Bonus: Kamen Rider Geats is kind of boring me
And I'm usually very excited to hear the words "READY, FIGHT!"
I’m just nine episodes in, completing the first arc but also very early in the journey that is a tokusatsu season. But I’m not really seeing any signs of this show improving, and every week I’m more confident that it won’t. So as a bonus post for you guys, I’d like to talk about how bored I am by Kamen Rider Geats.
“Geats” is kind of a corruption of “kitsune”, and this time the lead rider is fox-themed, a trickster hero. The setting is a giant battle royale video game, the stakes of which are the right to destroy and re-create the world in the winner’s image. It’s neither exactly a “riders battle monsters” setup nor exactly a “riders go to war with each other” setup; rather, they compete with each other to complete a goal… which usually involves beating up a lot of monsters.
The video game stuff wears out its welcome pretty fast. Kamen Rider premises are often based directly on stuff that’s popular with kids at the moment (like, tell me Kamen Rider Gaim’s design wasn’t influenced by the ubiquity of Fruit Ninja at that time), and Geats takes on the big one: Fortnite.1
